The YMCA Black and Latino Achievers
Leadership & Mentoring Program

Are you looking for an interactive, experiential, informative, and developmental program for your child?


The Black and Latino Achievers is a nationally recognized teen mentoring program for 8th-12th graders. The focus is to educate and expose youth to various career fields as well as promote and encourage teens to further their education to post secondary institutions. Youth participate in workshops on:

  • college readiness
  • career exploration & workforce development
  • early youth leadership
  • financial literacy


Program highlights include:

  • College tours
  • World of work tours
  • The Young World Radio Show
  • Awards Banquet & Gala

The group meets on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 10:00am – 1:00pm. There is a $10.00 application fee & $35.00 program fee.

Early Registration July1-31
Take advantage of early registration and pay only the $35.00 program fee. During the month of July the $10.00 application fee will be waived. Don’t wait!, Register Early!, Ensure your spot!, Save money!

Regular registration opens August 1, 2010. You can register online or at any of the following branches:

2010-2011 After School Program

After-School registration is currently being taken for the 2010-2011 school year for Kindergarten – 5th grade and Middle School.

  • The first day of After-School care will be Wed, August 25th. Care will not be available on the following dates: Monday, August 23rd and Tuesday, August 24th due to preparation for the upcoming after school program beginning Wednesday, August 25th.
  • After-School Open House will be held on two dates. Please attend either Thursday, August 12th or Friday, August 13th at 5:30-6:30pm.

The Alex W. Spears III Family YMCA offers member discounts on After School care and offers three options for care for kids Kindergarten through Middle School:

    • Full-Time, Full-Time with All-Days and Part-Time. 
    • Full-Time is care 5 days a week and Part-Time is 3 days a week.
    • All day programs are also available:
      • When Guilford County Schools are closed for teacher workdays. 
        • All days operate from 7:30am-6:00pm and are open to children outside of our afterschool program. 
  • Schools serviced:  Claxton Elementary, Guilford Primary, Jefferson Elementary, Summerfield-Laughlin Elementary, Jesse Wharton, Greensboro Academy, Caldwell Academy, Kernodle Middle, Guilford Middle and Northwest Middle. * Please note that our program requires 3 registered participants from each school in order to provide pick-up service.
  • The AfterSchool program follows the Guilford County School schedule. Our workdays, out-of-school days and holiday breaks follow the County school schedule.
  • Activities include: Homework time, Snack, Arts and Crafts, Character Building, Sports, Outdoor games, Board games, fitness activities, Swimming once per week and on out of school days
  • Hours of operation: Monday-Friday 2:30-6:30 p.m.; Teacher Workdays 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
  • Benefits of our program:
    • Out of school child care close to home!
    • Open for child care most holidays and teacher workdays (if registered for care with holidays).
    • All staff CPR and First-Aid certified.
    • All staff have a drug-free and criminal-free background.
    • The YMCA strives to develop the whole child with diverse activities for the spirit, mind and body.
